Gwent Old Pals Walkthrough
This quest can be started by challenging Zoltan to a game of Gwent at the Rosemary and Thyme.
As with the other Gwent side-quests ‘Gwent: Old Pals’ requires you to track down and play Gwent against a series of four increasingly difficult opponents. As you approach each of the challengers, you need to speak with them to start a match.
You can find the Gwent players associated with this side-quest in the following locations:
Location: Found at the Rosemary and Thyme in Novigrad.
Zoltan works with a Scoia’tael deck and his focus is primarily on overwhelming you with Muster cards – he has sets of the ‘Havekar Smugglers’ and ‘Dwarven Skirmishers’ and some Medic cards to re-activate discarded cards. He has several hero cards in his deck including ‘Isengrim Faoltiarna’ (Morale) and will also use Scorch at least once in the match. In addition to all of that, he also has in his possession a ‘Villentretenmerth’ card – so keep an eye on your front row strength values (and keep the total under 10) until he plays it. With a well-constructed Northern Realms deck featuring Heroes, some Tight Bond Units (Blue Stripes Commando + Catapults), Decoys and Spy/Medic cards, you should have no trouble outlasting him. As always, it’s also a wise move to switch your leader variant to Foltest with the ability to cast clear weather to help out if you get in a bind in the later rounds.
Defeating Zoltan will earn you the ‘Eithne’ Gwent card.
Note: For beating Zoltan you’ll earn 25XP.
Location: He’ll be found in his usual location in the Temerian Partisan Camp east of Novigrad.
Roche plays with a Northern Realms deck and uses Spy cards and Decoys when available. He’ll focus on amassing siege units in the back line before using a Commander’s Horn (with both his Leader Ability and Card) to greatly boost damage. It’s likely that you’ll see a Medic during your games with him, so be ready for a high Strength card to make a comeback at the time. He also has several hero cards including the 15 Strength ‘Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon’ card. He’ll also use Scorch at least once in the match. Using the Northern Realms, you should be able to use your Decoy cards and Spy/Medic abilities to quickly gain some additional cards in your hand. You’ll also want to try and get him to overcommit early so that you’ll be able to outlast him with your larger hand. He can be a weather man in the latter rounds so it’s a good idea (if you haven’t already) to switch your leader variant to Foltest with the ability to cast clear weather to help out if required.
Defeating Vernon Roche will earn you the ‘Saesenthessis’ Gwent card.
Note: For beating Vernon Roche you’ll earn 25XP.
Location: After starting the ‘Following the Thread’ side-quest you’ll be able to speak with him. Found in the Nowhere Inn or at Kaer Morhen (depending on story progression).
Defeating Lambert will earn you the ‘Triss Merrigold’ Gwent card.
Note: For beating Lambert you’ll earn 25XP.
After starting the ‘A Deadly Plot’ side-quest you’ll be able to speak with him. He can be found either at the Troll cave where you rescue him or in the Seven Cats Inn east of Novigrad.
Defeating him will earn you the ‘Geralt of Rivia’ Gwent card.
Note: For beating Thaler you’ll earn 25XP.
